BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, IN (TruckingNewsNow.com) (Source: Indiana State Police) — Indiana State Police Tuesday morning responded to a single vehicle crash on I-65 northbound near the 58 mile marker. A 15 year old passenger in the vehicle was seriously injured and transported to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.

The initial investigation by Trp. Seth Davidson indicated that a 2016 International box truck being driven by Chue Xiong, age 55, Claremont, North Carolina was traveling northbound on I-65 near the 58 mile marker. For an unknown reason, Xiong’s vehicle ran off the right side of the road.Evidence indicates that Xiong overcorrected, causing the vehicle to roll onto its passenger side before sliding into the median of I-65. During the collision, the load of cut bamboo that Xiong was hauling was released from the truck into the median of I-65.

As a result of the crash, Xiong sustained minor scrapes. He was treated at the scene for his injuries.A passenger in Xiong’s vehicle, Kong Pheng Xiong, age 15, Hickory, North Carolina sustained serious injuries in the crash. He was treated at the scene before being flown by Stat Flight Helicopter to Riley Children’s Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

It is believed that Chue Xiong is the uncle of Kong Xiong.

The Bartholomew County Health Department responded to the scene and determined that the load of bamboo shoots needed to be destroyed. The load was heading from North Carolina to Minnesota.

Crews were on scene for nearly five hours for crash investigation and cleanup. I-65 Northbound traffic was stopped initially due to the medical helicopter landing on the northbound lanes of I-65.

The investigation is ongoing. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Columbus Regional EMS, Southwest Fire Department, Stat Flight Medical Helicopter, and 31 Wrecker Service.
